This publication of Section 12 of the Sutra seeks to make Venerable Master Miao Lien’s guidance on the Buddha’s list of twenty difficulties more widely available. These twenty difficulties, while pertinent to all people, can be organized into two categories. Difficulties one to three describe the obstacles to secular cultivation while the rest explain the challenges of non-secular cultivation. Within the latter category, difficulties four to seventeen focus on the hindrances to self-cultivation, and the final three difficulties delve into the arduous task of delivering sentient beings.

However, the book does offer insight into the significant moments of his life and the Venerable Master’s, and others’ reflections on those moments.

In publishing this book, Lingyen Mountain Temple’s wish is that everyone can take up Venerable Master Miao Lien’s challenge and “make the courageous resolve to help others as well as yourself to obtain liberation”. Don’t think you can’t do it, Venerable Master says because you feel you are just an ordinary person and dare not make great vows. Let A Compassionate Life inspire you to cultivate your Mind of Great Compassion courageously and continuously. Then we may all follow the Venerable Master from this sea of suffering to the Western Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss.
